The pineapple has served as a symbol of hospitality and warm welcome through the history of the Americas. The ship's captains would bring the pineapples home and place them on the porch which would indicate that the Captain was home and to invite friends and relatives to their home.
The pineapple were carved into the bedposts and early wallpapers featured pineapples as well as tablecloths, doorknockers, stencils, etc. To this day on Cape Cod and all over New England and along the East Coast the welcoming pineapple is displayed.
